Master of Science in Chemical Engineering

Program Description: The Master of Science in Chemical Engineering offers research (thesis) and course intensive (non-thesis) options. The mission of the program is to prepare students who wish to either pursue doctoral work in chemical or bio engineering or to obtain an advanced technical position in industry. The departmental faculty members have active research projects in the areas of biomaterials, electrochemistry, environmental, paper physics and chemistry, solar cells, enzyme, drug delivery and tissue engineering. Students are required to take a total of 34 credit hours comprising of 500 level course work (12 credit for thesis option and 18 for non-thesis option) and 12 credit hours of courses numbered 600 or above and a research-based thesis (thesis option) or a research paper (non-thesis option). For the thesis or the research paper, students work with a faculty advisor on a research problem. Students in the combined BS/MS program can double count up to 6 and 9 credits for non-thesis and thesis options, respectively. Undergraduate Preparation: Students are eligible to apply for the combined bachelor's/master's degree program during the first semester of their junior year (or 64-80 hours earned) and can begin taking graduate courses during the second semester of the junior year (or after 80 hours earned). They also must have completed half of the departmental hours required for the major.

Provisional Admission: Students may be admitted on a provisional basis to a specific combined program anytime during their academic career at Miami, from the time they are admitted for undergraduate admission.

Full Admission: Upon earning a minimum of 64 credit hours and having a cumulative GPA of 3.25 or greater, students may apply for admission to the combined program. Programs may have more stringent requirements. Applications Procedures: To apply to a combined bachelors/masters program, go to http://www.miami.muohio.edu/graduate-studies/index.html to complete the Graduate School online application and pay the $50 application fee. Be sure to check “combined program.”

Students applying for the combined program should in general follow the procedure outlined in www.eas.muohio.edu/graduate-degrees/cse/admissions0/. Students having a cumulative GPA of 3.25 are not required to take GRE. Admitted international students meeting the University’s TOELF requirement do not need to re-take this test for admission to the combined program.

Student Classification and Graduation: Students in a combined program will remain as undergraduates until they apply for graduation or submit a request to the Graduate School to have their classification changed from undergraduate to graduate. Students must have completed a minimum of 128 hours to be classified as a graduate student (note: this change in classification will affect eligibility for financial aid). Students may receive their bachelor’s degree prior to completing their master’s degree. Upon receiving the bachelor’s degree, students will automatically be classified as graduate students. Students receiving the bachelor’s degree prior to completing the master’s degree can count up to 9 hours (9 hours for thesis option and 6 for non-thesis option) of graduate course work toward their bachelor’s degree with permission of the appropriate advisor(s) and dean(s) or their designee(s). Those hours can also count toward the completion of their master’s degree.
